During the medieval times Rajasthan developed its block printing art form on cotton fabrics. Dabu printing is one of them. Dabu printing is a resist dye method.
First a smooth paste is made of black clay which is readily available and mixed with few other natural ingredients.
The printing block is first dipped in this clay mix and stamped carefully on the fabric which is neatly spread on the wooden planks length wise. The entire length of the fabric is printed and the artisan does it very meticulously without any measuring tools.
After this process the fabric is sprinkled with saw dust, generously, so that the print does not stick to each other ruining the print. The fabric is them put for drying under direct sunlight. Once the fabric is completely dry it is ready to be dyed. The fabric is dipped in organic indigo dye which is extracted from indigofera tinctoria plant. The entire length of the cloth is immersed in huge tank containing the dye. The deeper the colour the more number if immersions.
